Tuberous begonia. Tula region
Begonia is
a very elegant plant, in which literally everything is beautiful: both flowers
and leaves. The main feature of begonias is their lush flowers, which
completely cover the plant. The plant is characterized by an incredible variety
of flower forms - they can be similar in structure to peony, narcissus,
carnation or camellia.
Begonia is
a genus of plants in the Begoniaceae family. It is a low herbaceous perennial
plant with a rhizome in the form of a bowl-shaped tuber.
The first
artificial hybrids were obtained in 1870, and subsequently at least seven
species were used for crossbreeding. As a result of this painstaking work, more
than 200 varieties of this perennial plant were born.
This flower
is classified into trailing, herbaceous, and shrub varieties. However, the most
important distinguishing feature is the presence of a developed root, which is
formed in the shape of a massive tuber, reaching up to 6-7 centimeters in
diameter.
The leaves
of this plant have an unusual shape, they are asymmetrical and look incredibly
beautiful. They can be matte or shiny and have different shades: from
grayish-silver to bronze-gold.
The plant
is not able to overwinter in the open ground in the rather harsh and fickle
weather conditions of Russia, so begonia tubers must be re-germinated every
year.
Tuberous
begonias are used to decorate terraces and patios. They are planted in garden
vases and hanging baskets - they can add charm to any corner of the garden.
Moreover, plants that grow in semi-shade look best. It is in slightly shaded
areas of the garden that the flowers are larger and the leaves are juicier.
Tuberous
begonia is also used in indoor culture. These bright lights of flowering
begonias can be spotted in the windows of many Tula residents.
The plant
is widely used in folk medicine. It is a good analgesic and antispasmodic
agent, has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects. Infusion of flowers is
used to treat wounds and burns, irritation and ulcers. Juice from the leaves is
used to soothe headaches. The root is used in the treatment of conjunctivitis.
Begonia
leaves are rich in phytoncides, thanks to which it has amazing properties to
clean and revitalize the indoor air. Begonia improves immunity, increases work
capacity and relieves fatigue, the flower helps to strengthen mental activity.
Begonia is
believed to help in achieving personal success. Thanks to its ability to
enhance brain activity, it contributes to the birth of new ideas, gives
strength and determination. It is essential where pessimists live and frequent
quarrels occur. It transforms negative energy into positive energy and lifts
the mood. The begonia is also a symbol of material well-being. It
embodies purity and virtue.
