New Year tree of the Republic of Karelia: Karelian birch and UNESCO heritage
Balls with
ancient ornaments of the peoples of Karelia, garlands from bags with a unique
pattern and of course saw cuts of the famous Karelian birch - Karelian
designers represented the most recognizable symbols of the region in the New
Year decoration of the fir tree.
The boards
are carved with silhouettes of architectural monuments of the republic, the
most recognizable of which, of course, is Kizhi.
Kizhi is an
architectural ensemble within the Kizhi State Historical and Architectural
Museum, located on the island of the same name on Lake Onega. The complex
consists of two churches and a bell tower of the XVIII-XIX centuries,
surrounded by a single hedge, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
In the decoration of the fir tree there are dolls in national dress, as well as figurines of a bear, which in the ancient times Karelians revered as a sacred animal, and attributed to themselves kinship with the mighty beast. The bear was so important for Karelian history that its image became the main element on the coat of arms of the republic.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by 89 New Year trees, each of them representing a region of the country. The RUSSIA EXPO is open from Tuesday through Sunday, Monday is a technical day. All expositions and events are free of charge.
