Landscape park, multimedia roof and "digital passport": what makes the new building of the National Centre RUSSIA unique
Construction of the National Centre RUSSIA, the future main public space of the capital, continues on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment. The diaphragm wall has already been completed, ensuring the stability of the underground section and minimising the impact on surrounding buildings. Excavation of the foundation pit is half complete: in some places, it has been deepened by more than 15 metres. The main feature of the work is that six operating tunnels of three metro lines run beneath the construction site. To ensure safety, part of the work was carried out at night, during the 2.5-hour break between the last and first trains.
"The new space of the National Centre RUSSIA is an architectural event of global scale, a unique project that we are implementing jointly with the Moscow Government. The main symbol of the building is the image of a flying veil (pokrov), embodying unity, protection and love for the country. The facade pattern is woven from the ornaments and symbols of the peoples of Russia," said Deputy Director General for Construction and Operation Ksenia Mayer.
Ksenia Mayer also added that the project’s main feature will be multimedia facades and a roof, with images and lighting adapting to ongoing events. An amphitheatre will be located beneath the large-span structure. The National Centre RUSSIA will become an innovative venue integrated into the urban environment. The project is being implemented by order of President of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin to demonstrate the country’s achievements, strengthen national identity, form a sense of pride in the country, develop the professional skills of children and young people, and preserve the legacy of the International RUSSIA EXPO. Once commissioned, it will be able to accommodate up to 20,000 visitors at a time.
The new building of the National Centre RUSSIA is being constructed in complex engineering and geological conditions. This was stated by Mosinzhproekt JSC Project Director Nikolai Golovin.
"The construction site of the National Centre RUSSIA is located on the territory of Expocentre. The future building is being constructed in complex engineering and geological conditions because of the abundance of confined groundwater in the soil. To ensure the reliability of the structure, the most complex engineering and structural solutions are being applied. At this stage, this is the diaphragm wall, which has already been completed, with almost 21,000 cubic metres of concrete poured for it," Nikolai Golovin noted.
According to Nikolai Golovin, the exposition zones alone will cover about 60,000 square metres. The centre will also include the country’s largest concert and congress block, media and press centres, as well as areas for business communication and recreation.
The complex is being designed using building information modelling technologies: the building exists simultaneously on the construction site and as a digital twin. This model makes it possible to work out in advance complex junctions between structures, engineering systems, the suspended envelope and multimedia equipment, as well as to assess visitor comfort, including by modelling wind flows beneath the large-span canopy.
A spatial shell with spans of up to 120 metres and a minimal number of internal supports is being created for the roof. The smooth bionic form of the roof will be emphasised by an integrated multimedia surface. The opening of the complex is scheduled for 2029.
