Geographical Dictation Written at the National Centre RUSSIA in Primorye
The branch of the National Centre RUSSIA in the Primorye region served as one of the venues for the Geographical Dictation – an international enlightening campaign held by the Russian Geographical Society. More than 30 participants gathered at the venue: residents of Vladivostok — from schoolchildren to senior citizens — as well as representatives of regional authorities and the expert community. The Centre’s tour guides and one of its "silver" volunteers also took part in writing the Dictation.
Before the start, the participants were welcomed by the Minister of Tourism of the Primorye region, Natalya Naboichenko, and the Chairman of the Primorye branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Alexei Buyakov. They also joined the ranks of those taking the Dictation.
Natalya Naboichenko emphasised the importance of preserving Russia's great historical and geographical legacy, which is reflected in the Dictation's questions. Furthermore, she noted the scale of the campaign: "Our National Centre RUSSIA in Primorye is one of 200 regional venues. Across Russia, over 10,000 such locations are registered. The Dictation is even being taken in space."
Alexei Buyakov shared that the initiative to hold the Dictation appeared 11 years ago at the proposal of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. Initially, the campaign took place at major university venues, including Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), then it became nationwide and later — international. He noted that the Dictation's audience is expanding: schoolchildren, students, military personnel, the Yunarmiya (Young Army) members, and the older generation. Such a reach, according to Alexei Buyakov’s, indicates that interest in geography is growing in the country.
The theme of the Dictation — 2025 was dedicated to key anniversaries: the 180th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society, the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and the 500th anniversary of the Northern Sea Route. The tasks covered Russia's natural features, cultural regions, national legacy, as well as historical and geographical connections with the BRICS countries.
The structure of the Dictation was traditional: the first part included 10 basic questions on the geography of Russia; the second — 30 more complex questions requiring to employ logic, attention, and in-depth knowledge. At the end, the participants filled out a second sheet, containing the information needed for self-checking and analysing their answers.
After the Dictation, the guests were invited on a tour of the National Centre RUSSIA in Primorye, where they could learn new information about the region's development, infrastructure projects, and future transformations.
