25 reasons for pride: the dam in St. Petersburg — the shield of the Northern Capital
Today, the dam fulfills three functions at once: hydraulic engineering, transportation, and urban protection, being a federally significant facility and a source of national pride.
We continue our special project "25 Reasons for Pride," dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the first inauguration of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. From that moment, Russia entered an era of large-scale decisions, where protecting lives, developing regions, and ensuring infrastructure resilience became priorities of state policy.
One such project is the Saint Petersburg Flood Protection Facility Complex, known as the St. Petersburg Dam. Construction began back in 1979, but the project was frozen for decades. It was revived in the 2000s — thanks to political will and substantial support from the state.
Since its launch, the dam has prevented more than 40 dangerous floods. The total length of the protective structure is 25.4 km, including a 1.2 km automobile tunnel under the bottom of the Gulf of Finland — the only such facility in Russia.
The dam has also become a key section of the Saint Petersburg Ring Road (KAD), connecting the shores and reducing traffic congestion in the city center.
