Konstantin Kosachev: "National unity defines Russia’s place in civilisation"
Senator and Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev shared his view of national unity at the National Centre RUSSIA as a politician, a citizen and a representative of a multinational country. He emphasised that this is not merely an elegant phrase but the foundation of Russia’s sovereignty and its unique position on the global stage.
"Without any doubt, national unity is Russia’s strength; it is what makes us a sovereign country and defines our place in civilisation," said Konstantin Kosachev.
According to the politician, there are not many states in the world capable of harmoniously organising the coexistence of different ethnic groups, cultures and religions, and even fewer that manage to do so in the same way as Russia.
"At the same time, it is equally important that we carefully preserve the distinctiveness of the 194 peoples living in the Russian Federation while also ensuring a shared sense of national unity and belonging among all peoples, regardless of the language they consider native, the religion they profess or the historical path they have followed," the senator added.
Konstantin Kosachev placed particular emphasis on the voluntary nature of the unity of Russia’s peoples. Unlike many multinational states whose territorial integrity relies on administrative or coercive methods, Russia, he noted, follows a different path.
"All the peoples of Russia feel themselves to be part of a single Russian nation. This is perhaps something that no other multinational state in the world has managed to achieve. In every such state problems inevitably arise in preserving territorial integrity and certain peoples strive for separation, but this does not happen in our country," Konstantin Kosachev emphasised.
The politician is convinced that the ability of Russia’s peoples to feel themselves part of a single nation is a unique value that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.
"We truly are united, and for me — as a politician, a senator and a citizen of the Russian Federation — this is the main outcome of our country’s many-thousand-year journey along its unique historical path. And if we possess such a legacy, we are obliged to pass it on to our descendants," Konstantin Kosachev concluded.
