Carpet weaving and silver engraving: workshops of Dagestan folk crafts at the National Centre RUSSIA
On 3 September, the National Centre RUSSIA is hosting day-long workshops on carpet weaving and silver engraving. The practical classes are part of the Days of the Republic of Dagestan at the exposition "Region 2030. Platform of the Future".
Dagestan’s folk master of weaving Umaysad Gadzhieva demonstrates the basics of this craft. Everyone can try their hand at this traditional folk art.
"I teach how to weave pile carpets, which are distinguished by complex patterns and are mainly produced in the southern regions of Dagestan, as well as pileless carpets — kilim and sumakh, which are characterised by a dense structure and geometric ornaments. In our tradition, carpet weaving is practised by women. It is painstaking work that requires patience, skill and artistic taste," said Umaysad Gadzhieva.
Dagestan carpets are a living history told through colours and patterns. Their production relies on natural materials and dyes. Wool, cotton, flax and plant-based dyes are all prepared by hand. Craftswomen use ancient weaving techniques passed down from generation to generation. All ornaments on the carpets carry their own meaning and convey the stories and thoughts of the people.
"This was my first time trying this craft. It was quite easy for me, since I crochet and sew a little. I think everyone with these skills will be able to master the basics of carpet weaving quickly. It is a fascinating activity, and most importantly, the result is so beautiful," shared Polina Yakovleva, a visitor of the exposition "Region 2030. Platform of the Future".
Master Nariman Khurdayev, Director General of Artel Kubachi LLC, demonstrates how to engrave a silver goblet made in the village of Kubachi.
"First, the items are cast on a special machine, then the initial engraving is applied manually with a cutter. Next comes nielloing, which is usually done by women. After that, polishing is carried out and additional engraving is applied. Children can begin to learn this craft from the age of six," explained Nariman Khurdaev.
The people of Kubachi carefully preserve the traditions of silverwork, while not hesitating to experiment and use new technologies. The Kubachi craft has always been valued for its beauty and high quality.
Masters use various techniques of silverwork such as chasing, engraving, niello, and filigree. The items are decorated with intricate patterns and ornaments carrying symbolic meaning. All of them are handmade, which makes them unique and inimitable.
The range of Kubachi jewellers’ products is extremely wide and includes women’s jewellery and interior items — vases, jugs, dishes, trays, boxes, mirrors and even weapons.
Registration for a tour of the exposition "Region 2030. Platform of the Future" is available on the website of the National Centre RUSSIA (russia.ru) in the "Events" section. Upcoming announcements can also be found there.
