Educational master class "Paint Like Kandinsky" was held at the National Centre
An educational family master class "Paint Like Kandinsky," dedicated to the life and work of the famous Russian artist and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky, was held at the National Centre RUSSIA on February 16.
"The project 'Masterpieces. The Best of Russia' is already well liked by our visitors. We see this from the feedback and the number of people wanting to participate. The most important thing for us is that entire families come to the workshops. Our guests have already been introduced to the works of Bryullov, Shishkin, and Vasnetsov. Today’s program features a new hero — the great Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, the founder of abstract expressionism. We hope he inspires guests of the National Centre to new achievements," noted Anastasia Zvagina, Deputy Director General of the National Centre RUSSIA.
The guests were introduced to the work of the famous artist by Veronika Nikiforova, a graduate student from the School of Design at the Higher School of Economics and the author of the project "(Not)Critical: Art, Fashion, Culture." A unique aspect of Kandinsky's artistic journey is that he decided to become an artist at a mature age, after building a career as a lawyer.
After the lecture, guests were invited to participate in a practical session — creating their own painting in the style of abstract art. The inspiration was Kandinsky's work "Black Spot" or, according to another version, "Black Dot," painted in 1924. The workshop was led by artist-teacher Anna Rusakova, a graduate of the K. A. Savitsky Art School. She explained how to find shapes and boundaries for one's work, harmoniously select colors, and arrange objects in space.
"We will all create something unique because the essence of abstract expressionism is to express one's own self: to reflect in your work your feelings, dreams, and character. Let’s aim for that and create boldly and freely," emphasized the artist.
At each stage of the process, participants were helped by artist assistants. Each creator imbued their work with its own meaning: some painted a still life, others created a fantastic animal, but most admitted they were inspired by space and the Universe when creating their paintings.
"We came to the workshop as a family. My husband Anton, our daughters Kira, Zlata, and Ulyana, and our eldest daughter, Sonya — she is the one who loves to draw the most in our family, so we decided to support her. And we really enjoyed it; I can't say that Kandinsky is my favorite artist, but I’m familiar with and interested in his work, so I listened to the lecture with pleasure, and the children were delighted with the practical part. It’s a very good and necessary event, especially for large families. I hope there will be more wonderful events like this!" shared Lyudmila, a master class participant.
The educational family master class "Paint Like Kandinsky" is part of the educational project "Masterpieces. The Best of Russia." It is aimed at fostering a sense of pride in the country and strengthening the culture of family values through the exploration of the art of Russian creators in an educational format. The next workshop will take place on March 16 and will focus on the works of Mikhail Vrubel.
