Traditions and the future: the National Centre RUSSIA congratulates on the Day of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the Russian Federation
Supporting the traditional way of life, crafts, and original culture — this year, on 30 April, the Day of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the Russian Federation is being celebrated for the first time. The holiday is intended to strengthen respect for their historical heritage and role in the country's development.
The commemorative date was established by a Decree of the President of Russia and is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the adoption of Federal Law No. 82-FZ "On Guarantees of the Rights of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the Russian Federation", dated 30 April 1999.
In the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia, this day takes on a special significance. Russia is a multi-ethnic state, home to more than 190 peoples, including 47 indigenous small-numbered ones. These include ethnic communities that live in the territories of their ancestors' traditional settlement, maintain a traditional way of life and crafts, identify as independent ethnic groups, and number fewer than 50,000 people. The majority of indigenous small-numbered peoples live in the North, Siberia, and the Far East.
In various regions of Russia, ethnographic expositions, festivals, concerts, craft masterclasses, fairs, and educational programmes are held on this day. The National Centre RUSSIA complements this agenda with its own projects, creating a space where residents and guests of the capital can personally familiarise themselves with the culture of indigenous peoples, seeing it as vibrant, modern, and forward-looking. Here, the theme of the unity of the country's peoples is revealed not only through major cultural projects but also through a live introduction to traditions at themed masterclasses and educational events.
The premiere of the musical and choreographic parable "Khorovod" took place at the National Centre RUSSIA on 28 April. This large-scale project, dedicated to one of Russia's most important cultural symbols, became the personification of mutual respect and the cultural diversity of the country's peoples.
The parable is structured as a multi-layered artistic statement and is divided into five themed blocks: "Russian Folk Dance", "Dances of the Peoples of Russia" (North, West, South, East, and historical territories), "Nature of Russia", "Youth and the Future", and "Pereplyas". Each part reveals a separate layer of the country's cultural identity, connecting tradition and modernity. In the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia, such initiatives become an important part of the collective work to strengthen inter-ethnic harmony.
