"Without a statute of limitations": the importance of documentary filmmakers' work for future generations recognised at the National Centre RUSSIA
More and more people abroad are learning the truth about events in Ukraine thanks to Russian and international documentary filmmakers. Stories of human destinies and real footage of events are becoming accessible to audiences worldwide. This was discussed at the roundtable entitled "No Statute of Limitations", held on 23 February, the final day of the 4th International Documentary Film Festival "RT.Doc: Time of Our Heroes", at the National Centre RUSSIA.
Rodion Miroshnik, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the ministry has prepared a brochure with information about documentary films. Using concrete evidence and eyewitness testimony, their authors expose violations of international humanitarian law by Ukraine.
"The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is interested in documentary films being translated into as many languages as possible. And these should not only be the official UN languages but also the languages of our potential partners <...> I thank the RT TV channel for their important work. I would like to assure you that on our part, we are facilitating the translation of these films into many languages of the world so they are accessible to the widest possible audience," emphasised Rodion Miroshnik.
Anna Soroka, Human Rights Commissioner of the Lugansk People's Republic, said that back in April 2014, when the Ukrainian authorities announced the start of the so-called "anti-terrorist operation" in Lugansk and Donetsk, people there started to think about creating a commission to collect and document evidence of violations by the Ukrainian authorities.
"All the information gathered by our law enforcement officers and public activists was processed and sent to various international bodies, including the International Criminal Court and the European Court of Human Rights. <...> This activity continues to this day. A large amount of data has been transferred to the Investigative Committee of Russia. Anyone interested in this topic can visit us or contact the office of the Human Rights Commissioner in Russia," said Anna Soroka.
Pavel Kukushkin, a war correspondent for the Volunteer Corps of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, thanked the RT TV channel for their work in the special military operation zone, and thanked documentary filmmakers from abroad who, at risk to their lives, film and speak about what is really happening.
"The screening of such films is extremely important, because they not only testify to real events but also open the eyes of Western audiences to the truth. After all, many people in the West, unfortunately, did not know what was actually happening in Donbass since 2014. Thanks to the dedication of war correspondents and documentary filmmakers, people are learning about real events. Moreover, these films become a valuable source of information for our future generations, who must know what their fathers and grandfathers fought for," believes Pavel Kukushkin.
The roundtable "Without a Statute of Limitations" was held as part of the 4th International Documentary Film Festival "RT.Doc: Time of Our Heroes". The festival's three-day programme included screenings of documentary films, an exposition of paintings dedicated to the heroes of the special military operation, roundtables, and a festive concert timed to Defender of the Fatherland Day.
