Lermontov Memorial Day: how the Caucasus became the great poet's source of inspiration
On 27 July, Russia marks the 185th anniversary of the death of Mikhail Lermontov, one of the country's greatest poets, novelists and playwrights. His works have become an integral part of Russian culture, while the characters and images he created continue to inspire readers, artists, filmmakers and scholars to this day.
Despite his short life, Mikhail Lermontov left behind an extraordinary literary legacy. His poetry, the novel "A Hero of Our Time", the narrative poems "Mtsyri" and "The Demon", and the play "Masquerade" all form part of the golden canon of Russian literature. Lermontov was among the first writers to combine profound psychological insight and philosophical reflections on human nature and destiny with the remarkable beauty of the Russian language. His works remain relevant today, helping each new generation explore themes of freedom, honour, love and the search for one's place in the world.
The Caucasus held a special place in the writer's life and work. As a child, Lermontov travelled there several times with his grandmother, and he later served in the region as an army officer. Its majestic mountain landscapes, local legends, the traditions of its peoples and its unique natural beauty found their way into many of his works. The poet himself referred to the Caucasus as his "poetic homeland", and the impressions he gained there remained with him throughout his life.
Today, visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the region that so profoundly inspired Lermontov at the "Journey Across Russia" exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA. The section dedicated to the North Caucasus Federal District introduces guests to the region's spectacular landscapes, rich cultural legacy and modern-day achievements.
Visitors can admire realistic models of Ingush ancestral towers and auls — traditional mountain villages, walk through a copy of the stone arch of the Aktoprak Pass in Kabardino-Balkaria, explore a detailed model of the "Heart of Chechnya" Mosque in Grozny, and learn more about traditional crafts, including Dagestani carpet weaving and Ossetian pottery. One of the halls invites guests to relax on suspended swings surrounded by the imagery of the Samur Forest, while the dome cinema offers a virtual journey through the ski resorts of the North Caucasus and the renowned Caucasian Mineral Waters spa region.
The Caucasian Mineral Waters occupied a particularly important place in Lermontov's life. The poet visited Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk on numerous occasions, where he wrote some of his works, spent time with friends and drew inspiration from the surrounding landscapes. It was also in Pyatigorsk that the final chapter of his life unfolded.
The story of the region continues today. A branch of the National Centre RUSSIA will soon open in the capital of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. It will be housed in the Palace of Creative Youth in the centre of Nalchik, close to the city's park and resort area. The new venue will become another space where visitors can discover the history, culture and traditions of the North Caucasus — the region that inspired Mikhail Lermontov nearly two centuries ago and continues to captivate millions of people today.
On Monday, 27 July, the National Centre RUSSIA will operate in maintenance mode and will be closed to visitors.
