Sevastopol’s New Year tree: maritime romance from the city of military glory
A city with a rich history, Sevastopol always has something to tell its guests. Until the XIII century it was the Byzantine city of Chersonesos.
Chersonesos was the largest seaport in Tauris. It was visited by the Apostle Andrew the First-Called during his journey. In the IX century the preachers of Christianity, the creators of the Slavonic alphabet Cyril and Methodius visited Chersonesos with a sacred mission. In 988, Prince Vladimir adopted Orthodoxy, marking the beginning of the Baptism of Russia.
The name Sevastopol is translated from Greek as «majestic, worthy of worship, the city of glory». The decoration of the fir tree represents Sevastopol as a maritime city of military glory.
The basis of the decoration are printed copies of paintings by prominent local artist Sergey Merkulov, as well as helms, ships — from ancient sailing ships to modern frigates.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by New Year fir trees, each representing a region of the country. The RUSSIA EXPO is open from Tuesday to Sunday, Monday is a technical day. The most convenient time to visit is in the mornings and weekdays, but the exposition is open to everyone on weekends as well. All expositions and events are free of charge.
The integration of special military operation veterans into peaceful life and the interaction between regions and municipalities were discussed as part of the Forum "SMALL HOMELAND – THE STRENGTH OF RUSSIA".
The second All-Russian Municipal Forum "Small Homeland – the Strength of Russia" is taking place at the National Centre RUSSIA.
