Christmas tree of the Yamalo-Nenets Area: the reindeer as the basis of the universe
The highlight of the region's New Year tree are transparent spheres that give us a glimpse into the world of Yamal, including polar bears and a patch of forest with cloudberries.
And, of course, endless reindeer sleds.
Sixty years ago, these were harsh, uninhabited lands. And now YNAA is the center of oil and gas industry, where the achievements of civilization and national way of life of the indigenous population are combined in an amazing way. The region produces more than 80% of Russia's natural gas.
The Yamalo-Nenets Area is home to three small-numbered indigenous peoples: Nenets, Selkups and Khanty. Reindeer here are not just pets, but one of the foundations of the universe. Therefore, images of the animal can be found literally on everything that can be decorated.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by New Year fir trees, each of them representing a region of the country.
