New Year tree of the Yaroslavl region: majolica and cheese boards
The main
decoration of the region's fir trees are real glazed tiles made in the
traditional technique of majolica, a type of multicolored ceramics that is
widely used to decorate buildings.
In Russia,
Yaroslavl was considered a major center of majolica production. Since the
middle of the XVII century they began to produce glazed tiles for decorating
churches and houses there. By the XIX century products in the technique of
majolica were used in exterior and interior decoration, also a large number of
dishes and interior decorations were produced.
For a long
time, this craft was in oblivion and about 20 years ago talented artists N.
Pavlova and E. Shepelev revived the art by creating a workshop, which later
became known as "Yaroslavl Majolica".
Applied products for everyday life - cheese painted boards in the traditional color scheme of ancient tiles - are also used in the decoration.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by 89 New Year trees, each of them representing a region of the country. The RUSSIA EXPO is open from Tuesday through Sunday, Monday is a technical day. All expositions and events are free of charge.
