Kolyadki — Russia's cultural legacy
Kolyadki (Carols) are an ancient Russian custom associated with the winter Christmastide and New Year. During the period from 6 to 19 January, groups of carollers go from house to house with songs and greetings, wishing the hosts prosperity and abundance. In return for their good wishes, the costumed carollers receive treats or a small payment.
This tradition is closely linked to the winter season and the belief in the power of words that can bring good fortune. Kolyadki are filled with symbols of fertility and prosperity, wishes for a bountiful harvest and family wellbeing. Today, kolyadki are not only a folk tradition but also part of Russia's cultural legacy.
At the National Centre RUSSIA, colourful theatrical kolyadki performances, titled "A Fairytale Path", will take place from 6 to 11 January. Magical characters from eight regions of our country will act as guides on the path to adventure. Each stop on this route is a new page of the fairytale, an engaging story, and vivid impressions.
