Mari "Flower Holiday" was held at the RUSSIA EXPO
The
traditional Mari flower holiday "Peledysh Payrem" is celebrated by
the residents of the Republic of Mari El in late spring or early summer. Guests
of the RUSSIA EXPO joined the bright festive procession, took part in a flash
mob and listened to the best examples of Mari and classical instrumental music.
The holiday
"Peledysh Payrem", which means "the holiday of flowers",
appeared at the time of the birth of the Soviet Union in 1920 on the initiative
of the famous Mari writer, teacher and public figure Alexander Konakov. Today,
the "Flower Holiday" is a bright combination of the legacy of the
Soviet era and original traditions, and in 2022, the head of the Republic Yuri
Zaitsev decided to give the holiday a state status. Since then, "Peledysh
Payrem" has been one of the main holiday dates in the Republic.
"In
more than 100 years, the holiday has become important, truly popular and truly
multinational. And when I saw how people celebrate this holiday, how they
rejoice, walk the streets, give each other flowers, show their crafts, I had no
choice but to make this holiday official. So I congratulate you and want to
thank you for supporting the culture of the Mari people. And we on the part of
the government try to do our best to make as many people as possible learn
about the Mari culture and the Mari land," said the Head of the Republic
of Mari El Yuri Zaitsev.
"Peledysh
Payrem" is not only a bright mass holiday, known far beyond the borders of
the Republic of Mari El, but also an important step to the preservation of the
cultural heritage of the Mari people and the whole country.
"Everything
around us at this amazing Exposition — pavilions, fountains — are objects of
material cultural heritage. But there is also such a phenomenon as intangible
ethno-cultural heritage. And if buildings and fountains will somehow remain for
the next generations, then folk culture, art, traditions will be inherited only
if and when we preserve them. I am very glad that the Republic of Mari El
preserves its rich culture and traditions very carefully and reverently. And I
am sure that you see it today and are happy about it in the same way. Because
each of such holidays is our national treasure, the treasure of our great country,"
emphasized Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of
the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, representative of the executive
body of state power of the Republic of Mari El.
The holiday
"Peledysh Payrem", in which it is customary to sing songs, dance and
have fun from the heart, is one of the brightest and most memorable events of
the year for the Mari people that gathers thousands of participants and
spectators. Anyone could join the festive procession at the Exposition. A
bright, noisy and colorful column of parade participants followed from the
"Stone Flower" fountain to the Main Street Stage of the Exposition,
and the colorful event ended with a mass flash mob, during which the artists
together with the guests performed the traditional dance "Mari
Circle".
"It is
very pleasant that today the Mari people celebrate their favorite holiday
practically in the center of Moscow. In the Republic of Mari El itself, the
holiday gathers as many people in national costumes, the color scheme of which
depends on the territory, but in general all the costumes are light, bright,
clean — just like the people themselves. It is great that the modern clothes
also have elements of the national costume and Mari ornament, which cannot be confused
with any other. Today they stylize T-shirts, jeans and everything else. And, of
course, the bright traditions of our holiday are music, dancing, procession,
sports games, creative workshops and expositions for all comers," said
Larisa Yakovleva, Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly of the Republic of Mari
El.
The
large-scale presentation of the flower holiday "Peledysh Payrem"
ended with a concert on the Main Street Stage. The program featured the best
artists and creative groups of the Republic of Mari El, such as the State
Orchestra of Folk Instruments 'Mari Kundem' named after S. Elembaev, the Mari
National Drama Theater named after M. Shketan, the Mari State Academic Theater
of Opera and Ballet named after E. Sapaev, the All-Mari Children's Gusli Ensemble,
and, of course, the State Dance Ensemble 'Mari El' — the true hallmark of the
Republic."
