Registration opens for the literary club meeting "What to Read?!" dedicated to the 200th birthday of Saltykov-Shchedrin
The 200th birth anniversary of the classic of Russian
literature, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, is an excellent occasion to rediscover
his work. What can the satirist and the public official who knew the state
system from within, the author of fairy tales intended for adults, tell us
today? On 31 January, participants of the upcoming meeting of the literary club
"What to Read?!" will discuss this and much more at the National
Centre RUSSIA. Registration for the event has already started on the website
russia.ru.
The literary evening at the "What to Read?!" club
proposes to go beyond the school curriculum and, together with experts, explore
the phenomenon of Saltykov-Shchedrin's timeless classic. The audience will
learn where in modern-day society the characters revealed by the author, and
familiar to us from childhood, can still be encountered; why
Saltykov-Shchedrin's biting satire on the bureaucracy, stupidity, and human
vices sometimes sounds more vivid than newspaper headlines; and how it happened
that this writer is one of the most quoted Russian classics on social media.
The meeting will traditionally be hosted by the Head of the
Academic Council of the Centre for Political Conjuncture, Professor at the HSE
University, author of the Telegram channel "Chesnakov.Library",
Alexei Chesnakov. His interviewee will be Sergei Dmitrenko, connoisseur of
Russian literature, Vice-Rector for Research and Creative Work, Head of the
Department of Contemporary Russian Literature at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute,
Candidate of Philology. Together, they will help the audience understand what
makes Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin's legacy not only a subject of pride for
descendants but also a living tool for comprehending modern day realities.
The literary club "What to Read?!" is an in-house
project of the National Centre RUSSIA, and was created to discuss literary
legacy and exchange ideas and experiences. The focus of the experts and guests
of this intellectual platform is the development of reading culture, interest in
meaningful writing, and the expansion of the space for public dialogue.
To join the club's events and become a participant in many
other educational and cultural programmes at the National Centre RUSSIA free of
