A protective veil — the symbol of the new space of the National Centre RUSSIA
On 26 March, Vladimir Putin launched construction of the new
building of the National Centre RUSSIA, which will open in 2029. The future
space is intended to become an architectural landmark with no equivalents in
the world and a symbol of modern Russia. Director General of the National
Centre RUSSIA, Natalia Virtuozova, told the head of state that the shape of the
building’s roof is based on the image of a protective veil (pokrov) that
shelters the country.
"Russia has always sheltered people of different nationalities and religions with care and protection. Our architects were inspired by the veil — pokrov — it embodies warmth, comfort, care, and confidence in the present and the future," said Director General of the National Centre RUSSIA, Natalia Virtuozova.
The veil represents the country’s all-encompassing love — a symbol of protection and unity. It is multifaceted and resonates with several images close to the heart. First, it resembles a blanket of snow covering the fields — soft, calm, protecting the land and giving it shelter. Second, it evokes a mother’s headscarf: beneath it there is always warmth and comfort, symbolising care, support, and family unity. Finally, it recalls the omophorion of the Most Holy Mother of God — a symbol of spiritual protection and prayerful care. Lightness, dynamism, openness to light and air, and accessibility to people and the city are the qualities the authors sought to convey.
Alongside its symbolic meaning, the design also incorporates unique functionality. The lighting will change depending on the season and time of day, and the multimedia surface will allow for the display of various images adapted to ongoing events. For example, state symbols can be displayed on Russia Day.
The National Centre RUSSIA was established by order of the
President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to showcase the country’s
achievements and foster a sense of pride.
The project is being implemented jointly with the Moscow
Urban Development Complex. Work on the concept began in 2025, and the opening
is planned for the end of 2029. The entire complex will cover more than 14
hectares and will be able to accommodate around 20,000 visitors at once. It
will include exposition spaces, a transformable congress and concert hall, and
media and press centres. It will be a multifunctional space where everyone can
find something of interest, from business events to educational, cultural, and
outreach programmes. After construction is completed, the second phase of the
project will begin — the development of a four-hectare landscape park.
The section dedicated to the journey of Soviet Arctic explorer Ivan Papanin is located in the second hall of the exposition "Geography Lessons" — "Courage. Expeditions, Discoveries".
