"Expand both BAM and the entire Eastern polygon": Sergei Ivanov named the key tasks of the transport industry
The transport industry is facing new complex challenges related to the reorientation of the Russian economy. This was stated by Sergeш Ivanov, Special Representative of the Russian President for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport, at the RUSSIA EXPO. Among the main objectives is, in particular, the expansion of the Eastern polygon.
"Since it is clear that for many decades ahead foreign trade activity is shifting to the East - it is necessary to expand both BAM and the entire Eastern polygon. This task is clear, it is on the agenda. The third stage of expansion has already been considered by the Government. And I hope that the relevant work will begin this year with the allocation of funds," said Sergei Ivanov.
The second large-scale project is the North-South transportation corridor, he noted. Last year, the Caspian Canal was deepened - as a result, river-sea vessels with a draft of four and a half meters were able to move freely and go to the ports of Iran, Azerbaijan and other countries, said Sergei Ivanov. But there is still necessary work to be done.
"Of course, the railway infrastructure still needs to be modernized - and the construction of a large section of 155 km on the territory of Iran. So that we could have a through railroad to the Persian Gulf ports with access to India. This will significantly facilitate and increase the volume of Russia's foreign trade. In any case, I think this route will become a competitor to the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, taking into account the circumstances that are currently unfolding in this region," concluded Sergei Ivanov.
