Preserve or destroy: the interactive art object "Microcity" at the "Legacy for the Future" exposition
The
National Centre RUSSIA showcases around 250 works by young artists from
different countries. Many art objects invite viewers to engage not only
visually but also through auditory perception. Some exhibits even allow for
direct interaction, such as controlling "Microcity" — a model city
built on a microchip. Here’s why this piece is particularly fascinating.
The art
object "Microcity" is a collaborative project created by students of
the National University of Science and Technology MISIS. At the exposition
"Legacy for the Future," it stands out as one of the few pieces
featuring interactive elements. Visitors can toggle switches to make the city
lights come alive, bringing the city to life and playing different melodies.
But there is one important rule: no matter what you do, do not press the red
button.
According
to the creators' concept, the red button plays a key role in the art object. On
one hand, it symbolizes the desire to defy meaningless prohibitions, as
visitors to the exposition are not told why the button should not be pressed,
which is why nearly everyone decides to press it. On the other hand, it
illustrates how easily society succumbs to provocation and engages in senseless
actions.
The red
button is also a symbol of destruction. Pressing it means destroying something
previously created. The art object is dedicated to this unconscious desire to
destroy, even what one has created oneself.
At the
gallery of the National Centre RUSSIA, visitors can see paintings, sculptures,
engravings, photographs and videos, installations, and even architectural
projects created by young artists over the past few years. Guests can explore
the exposition independently or join a free guided tour, available in 30-minute
or one-hour formats. Registration is available on the website in the
"Events" section.
