A workshop titled "City-Bridge" was held at the art class of the architectural exposition "The Birth of Scale"
On April 26, the art class of the architectural exposition "The Birth of Scale" at the National Centre RUSSIA hosted the "City-Bridge" workshop, organized by the children's architectural studio "I CAN!".
The theme of the workshop combined architecture, engineering, and imagination: participants worked together to create a giant bridge that not only connected two shores but also became an independent architectural space. Under the guidance of architect, interior designer, artist-illustrator, and "I CAN!" school teacher Feodor Yershov, the children designed the supports and body of the bridge, and then built structures using foam board and pasta sticks.
The founder of the "I CAN!" studio, Marina Vaisman, said that the goal of the workshop was to introduce children to the basics of architecture through collaborative creativity.
"Feodor Yershov is creating a unified giant bridge together with the children. They discuss the objects of the exposition, learn what supports and the body of a bridge are, and then jointly build a common bridge — each one making their own segment," noted Marina Vaisman.
Feodor Yershov emphasized that the workshop was aimed at studying architectural elements and developing teamwork skills.
"One of the tasks is to think through the concept of joint work and engage all children in the overall process. The second is to show the creative side of the architect’s profession. We study the elements of bridges and combine them with an urban planning system, implementing a shared urban concept in our bridges," said Feodor Yershov.
The young participants also shared their impressions.
"I am passionate about crafting — making models and crafts from cardboard. I really enjoyed everything at today’s workshop. I met a boy, and together we made a rope swing for the bridge. I would like to come again to the workshops held here," said 13-year-old workshop participant Alexei.
The architectural exposition "The Birth of Scale" at the National Centre RUSSIA reveals the grandeur of Russia through its architectural legacy. The exposition features both the National Centre RUSSIA's own exhibits and exhibits provided by museums and private collectors from across the country. Among them are architects’ tools from different eras, drawings and models, and building models — both successfully constructed and those that remained as pioneering ideas. A separate section is dedicated to the future of Russian architecture — children's creative studios, student workshops, and works by young architects.
The partners of the exposition "The Birth of Scale" are DOM.RF, the Ministry of Construction of Russia, Gazprom, the State Research Museum of Architecture named after A.V. Shchusev, the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Yakov Chernikhov Architectural Charity Foundation, and the HSE School of Design.
You can join a guided tour of the exposition "The Birth of Scale" and attend workshops as part of the educational programme "Children's Architectural Workshops" free of charge by registering in advance on the website of the National Centre RUSSIA at russia.ru. Current information about the workshops can be found in the "Events" section.
The children's workshop "Houses and Little Homes in the City" was held on 19 April at the National Centre RUSSIA.
