"There will be no return to the old world order": an interview with Fyodor Lukyanov is available on the website of the National Centre RUSSIA
The world is changing continuously, along with the
challenges facing all of us. An ideal storm in which humanity is moving towards
a new global order marked by rising conflict and unpredictability will not
bypass Russia either. The Editor-in-Chief of the magazine "Russia in
Global Affairs", Fyodor Lukyanov, spoke about what Russia’s place in a
multipolar world may be in an interview with Vedomosti at the National Centre
RUSSIA. The interview was moderated by Roman Romanov, a columnist for the International
Experience section of the Vedomosti online edition. The recording of the
interview has been published on the russia.ru website.
"For eighty years, the international system existed
first in a highly structured state and then in an increasingly less ordered
one, but still within the wake of that order. It was an order that emerged as a
result of the Second World War. If we try to summarise what its stability was
based on, it was a system built on institutions that were delegated the right
and the ability — not in absolute terms, but nonetheless — to regulate
international relations <...> As for multipolarity, it is not a system
but an environment in which we now exist: a large number of different centres
of influence, power and interests of varying scale. Some of them have a greater
impact on the global situation, others a smaller one — not everyone, but around
twenty of them. The multipolarity we imagined during the era of American
hegemony and the multipolarity we have today are very different from one another,"
Fyodor Lukyanov said during the interview.
During the conversation, the expert addressed the
transformation of the global order and the crisis of former international
institutions, the transition to genuine multipolarity and the rise in global
conflict. Fyodor Lukyanov also spoke about the role of the United States,
rivalry with China and Russia’s place in the changing world. The discussion
also covered the prospects of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation,
as well as the future of Russian-American relations.
