"The true round dance exists only among Russians": Nikolai Tsiskaridze at the National Centre RUSSIA
The round dance is an ancient Russian tradition that was later adopted by other peoples. This was stated at the National Centre RUSSIA by the Rector of the Vaganova Ballet Academy and People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Tsiskaridze. The open dialogue with the artist took place as part of the educational marathon "Russia — a Family of Families" organised by the Russian society Znanie.
"The true round dance exists only among Russians. That is precisely why the 'Dance of the Little Swans' creates such an extraordinary impression all over the world. If you look at Italian or French dances, you will not find a round dance anywhere. It is a tradition of Russian culture that the French once saw, admired for its beauty, and created a ballet scene based on it that still makes such a powerful impact today," Nikolai Tsiskaridze said.
In addition, the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation recalled his tours in the United States: "I was once asked why we believe Russian ballet is the most important. I was a bold child and replied that ballet has been taught in Russia longer than the United States has existed as a state. That is true. Ballet has been taught here for 300 years, and the state invests enormous resources so that schools and theatres exist not only in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, but also in many major cities across the country. Very few states in the world spend so much on culture."
The year 2026 has been declared by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, as the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia. The Russian language and culture are native to everyone and form the heart of the country. They constitute the foundation of identity, inspire new achievements, help people find inner strength, and make it possible to feel unity with every region from Crimea to Kamchatka. Russian culture represents a single harmonious cultural environment that reflects the interests of all the peoples of the country.
