Nizhny Novgorod region
The Nizhny Novgorod region is one of the largest regions in Russia and is part of the Volga Federal District. It serves as the center of the European part of Russia and is a junction for international transport corridors "North-South" and "West-East."
We have a rich heritage. From Nizhny Novgorod in 1612, under the command of Minin and Pozharsky, a people's militia went to Moscow and liberated Rus' from the invaders. Outstanding personalities: Kulibin, Pushkin, Gorky, Chkalov, Alekseev, Neimark, Sakharov, who changed culture, science, medicine and industry, lived and worked here.
We have a third of all the country's folk crafts: Khokhloma, Gorodets painting, - more than 200 species.
Nizhny Novgorod was called the “Pocket of Russia” because the Nizhny Novgorod Fair was the largest trade event of the Russian Empire in the 19th century, attracting merchants from all over the world. The empire’s developments were also presented here: the first Russian car, a water filtration system, an electric tram.
From 1932 to 1990, Nizhny Novgorod was named Gorky. During this period, the region became an industrial giant, and its residents contributed to the victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Today the region became a popular tourist and cultural center.
