Five looks from the "Renaissance.Transformation" project, presented at the SERGEY SYSOEV FASHION SCHOOL runway show during the Autumn-Winter 2025/26 season of Moscow Fashion Week, tell the story of the iconic architecture of the Renaissance and the fundamental element of Roman architecture — the arch, inherited by the Romans from the Etruscans.
An arch is a bridge. An arch is an aqueduct. An arch is the Colosseum. The triumphal arch. An arch is not merely a work of architecture, it is the idea and philosophy of a Roman, a symbol of the threshold of change.
The canvases of famous Renaissance artists — Fra Angelico ("Annunciation"), Botticelli ("The Birth of Venus," "Primavera"), Raphael (the fresco "Disputation"), Michelangelo (the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican), Leonardo da Vinci ("The Virgin of the Rocks," "Annunciation") — were created by artists who composed with an arch-based structure in mind...
Yulia Kopylova
At the heart of the look is the painting "Annunciation" (1426) by Proto-Renaissance artist Fra Angelico, transformed into a dress. The Annunciation is often depicted against the backdrop of an arch — a symbol of the transition from the earthly world to the Heavenly Kingdom. The look was created using the draping technique on a mannequin.
Anastasia Gurtovaya
The bright red dress created by Anastasia Gurtovaya is inspired by Leonardo's engineering vision that permeates all his work. In the painting "The Virgin of the Rocks" (1486), the figure of Elizabeth — the mother of John the Baptist — appears. Her red cloak clearly reflects the artist’s work on the invention of the parachute, just as in the painting "Annunciation" (1472–1475), where the angel is depicted with technologically engineered wings.
Yekaterina Prigonyuk
This look is inspired by the frescoes of the great Michelangelo — the Sistine Chapel (Vatican, 1481). The themes of the frescoes are transformed into a print on a cloak with a dramatic train.
Safdari Kabudsor
The foundational prints of this sporty look are based on plant ornaments inlaid in the marble of the entrance group of the Vatican Library. The designer explored this architectural theme through the painting "Sixtus IV Appoints Platina as Prefect of the Library" (1477) by Melozzo da Forlì.
Irina Vasyutina
After carefully studying the ceiling of the Uffizi Gallery (Florence, 1581), the designer developed a print with grotesque ornamentation for a dress with a cape. The intricate patterns of botanical tendrils, zoomorphic motifs, and chimeric humans, united by a fantastical storyline, were detailed by the designer into a coupon pattern. A viewer accustomed to observing paintings can now examine the details of historic architectural painting through a cocktail dress.
