Astrakhan Woven Bags

Incredibly lightweight woven bags and baskets are crafted by artisans from Astrakhan. Their products are a true symbol of the local folk craft.

Baskets, panniers, punnets, and bags are woven from chakan (cattail plant) — a marsh plant that grows abundantly in the Volga delta. Before weaving, part of the plant is dried in the sun, giving it a beautiful golden hue, while another part is soaked in water for a month. After preparation, the stems become smooth, brown, and acquire a soft silky sheen. Chakan products are distinguished by their strength, durability, and beauty.
