25 reasons for pride: Arctic Shelf – energy of the future and Russia’s sovereignty
The development of the Arctic shelf is not only a race for resources — it is a battle for the future. For strategic control, for scientific leadership, and for the independence of Russia’s energy sector.
We continue our special project "25 Reasons for Pride," dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the first inauguration of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. This date marked the beginning of a new era — a time of strategic thinking, the strengthening of state power, and the return of Russia to the sphere of its historical interests.
One such reason for pride is the development of the Arctic shelf — the largest energy reserve of the 21st century.
The Russian section of the Arctic shelf covers over 4 million square kilometres of maritime territory rich in oil, gas, and strategic resources. According to expert estimates, more than 20% of the world’s undiscovered hydrocarbon reserves are concentrated on the shelf.
Since the 2000s, Russia has pursued a systematic and peaceful effort to gain recognition for the expansion of its Arctic boundary. In 2007, at a depth of 4,261 metres, Russian researchers planted a flag on the seabed of the Arctic Ocean, declaring Russia’s sovereign presence in the Arctic.
Industrial development of the region began: the world’s largest offshore Arctic oil production project — the Prirazlomnoye field in the Pechora Sea — was launched in 2013.
The Arctic is becoming a key element of Russia’s energy, transport, and defence strategy. The Northern Sea Route is being developed, Arctic ports are being established, and nuclear-powered icebreakers are being built.
