What awaits Russia in ten, fifteen, or one hundred years? What will its place in the world be, and how can values be preserved in the age of artificial intelligence? These and other questions were discussed at the National Centre RUSSIA during a meeting of the Literary Club "What to Read?!", where a new book by Alexander Zhuravsky, Candidate of Theological Sciences and Candidate of Historical Sciences, was presented. The original futurist novel Alternative explores a possible future of the country and its role in the world.

The author spoke in detail about how the structure of the work was developed and the artistic challenges he faced during the writing process. According to him, the book became a response to the complex realities of the present and required going beyond a single genre in order to fully convey the multi-layered nature of the plot and the diversity of narrative lines.

"I was inspired by a very complex reality and the challenges that have emerged in our recent history. The multi-genre nature of the book developed from the plot itself — it was impossible to present it in a single style. The first part describes the special military operation — it is a psychological and military novel. But when we move into the future, elements of imagination appear, even science fiction. There is also an adventurous storyline involving a double agent. There is a love story — a romantic element. There is a spy thriller. There is a theme that, to be honest, I have not encountered in domestic literature — the intense inner life of the American White House. It was necessary to bring all these different genres together, and this could only be done through a rich and technically varied Russian language. That is what I attempted to do," Alexander Zhuravsky explained.

He also admitted that working on the material was not easy: "I have always been irritated by a condescending attitude towards the reader, which is often found in both cinema and literature. Once, in an argument, a well-known screenwriter told me: 'Films about firefighters are not made for firefighters — they will always find many inaccuracies anyway.' As someone with a higher technical education, I cannot treat either the reader or my work in that way."

The diversity of genres and meanings that the author managed to combine in one book impressed the host of the Literary Club meeting — Head of the Scientific Council of the Centre for Political Conjuncture, Professor at HSE University, and author of the Telegram channel "Chesnakov. Library", Alexei Chesnakov.

"I stretched out the experience of reading the book — I did not want to read it too quickly, even though I had already seen some reviews. I wanted to preserve the emotion. I really liked the book. It is a complex, multi-layered text where reality and the future intertwine. And it is not a distant future a hundred years from now, but one that will unfold within our lifetime. I was inspired by this interesting blend of reality, futurology, fiction, and a deep knowledge of the subject matter," Alexei Chesnakov said.

He added that people turn to astrologers, science fiction writers, and futurists because they want to understand the time in which they will live: "Any literature connected with the image of the future is an attempt to look into a place where you hope to find yourself."

Together with Alexei Chesnakov, the author reflected on the relationship between dreams and forecasts, why society needs to think about the future, and how to preserve values that will not sustain themselves. When asked whether the characters in the book have real-life prototypes, he did not hide it: "I even started counting — there are more than fifty. Some characters are recognisable, some can be identified by their psychological type, and some definitely have real-life prototypes."

As for Russia’s place in future scenarios, Alexander Zhuravsky added: "The circumstances require effort from all of us, including in achieving success. I believe our country will successfully cope with the tasks it faces today."

During the traditional Q&A session, the audience asked about plot lines, the future of futurist literature, Alexander Zhuravsky’s personal attitude to artificial intelligence, and other topics. The authors of the three best questions received signed copies of Alternative.

Any book about the future is less a prediction than an invitation to reflect on what we need to do for a better tomorrow, Alexei Chesnakov concluded. Judging by the audience’s response, Alexander Zhuravsky’s novel Alternative became exactly such an invitation.

The Literary Club "What to Read?!" was created at the National Centre RUSSIA to discuss literary heritage, exchange ideas and experience. The focus of this intellectual platform is the development of reading culture, interest in thoughtful writing, and the expansion of public dialogue.

It is possible to join club events and take part in many other educational and cultural programmes at the National Centre RUSSIA free of charge with prior registration on the website russia.ru. Up-to-date information about events is available in the "Events" section.
