America in search of common sense: a new episode of "The Nature of Values" podcast is out
Just a few decades ago, the United States of America was "selling" the world an image of freedom, individualism and equal opportunity. Today, it is debating race, identity, cancel culture and the boundaries of what is acceptable. In the latest episode of the research podcast project "The Nature of Values", host Alexei Slushchev and political scientist Pavel Dubravsky discuss how American values have changed and why the struggle for minority rights has become a major conflict over language, culture and power.
The conversation centres on the postmodern era that the United States has entered in recent decades. Established norms are being reconsidered, identity is becoming a political argument, and a public statement can cost someone their career and reputation. Some describe these developments as a fight for justice; others see them as a new form of censorship.
The participants explore how American values developed and when debates about rights and equality became a clash over language and what is acceptable. Particular attention is paid to changes in public debate and the consequences for society of reconsidering established norms.
"The Nature of Values" is a series of podcast interviews exploring how human and cultural values are formed, change and endure. The project combines expert discussion with first-person stand-up storytelling. The host asks uncomfortable and naive questions, inviting viewers to join the search for answers. The project aims to encourage independent critical thinking rather than offer ready-made moral lessons.
