As part of the educational programme of the architectural exposition "The Birth of Scale" at the National Centre RUSSIA, the sixth lecture in the educational series — "Engineering Russia" — took place. The meeting was dedicated to the technical side of the architectural art: from the earliest engineering achievements of Peter the Great’s era to the large-scale projects of modern Russia.

The lecture was moderated by art expert and architectural historian Yelizaveta Likhacheva, and the speaker was Nikolai Vasilyev — Associate Professor at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, Professor at the Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute, and Advisor to the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences.

During the event, architecture was presented as a comprehensive science that approaches building design from a wide range of perspectives, noted Vsevolod Popov, a student at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering and guest of the National Centre RUSSIA.

"I'm interested in architecture; I study at the Faculty of Architecture. I want to pursue it professionally in the future. What stood out to me was the structure that transports ships from one part of the river to another. I still can’t imagine how such a complex and technically sophisticated object could be designed, how it was brought to life, and what kind of work went into it," said Vsevolod Popov.

He added that he first discovered Yelizaveta Likhacheva’s lectures online.

"I found them captivating and watched several episodes. My lecturer sent me a link to register for the lecture at the National Centre RUSSIA, and I came with great interest. Architecture makes you think not only about how to construct a building — it is a comprehensive science not only about the artistic appearance of structures, but also about the competent use of space, economic feasibility, and much more," emphasised Konstantin Dmitriev

Olga Monastyrskaya also first discovered Yelizaveta Likhacheva’s lectures on the website of the National Centre RUSSIA, after which she decided to attend the meetings in person.

"I’ve now come to listen live. I work on museum projects. If you're not a historian, an engineer, or an art historian, it’s a large amount of new information. But it’s delivered in an accessible format, and it’s easy to take in. I’m planning to attend the next lecture," said Olga Monastyrskaya.

The lectures are free to attend with prior registration on the website of the National Centre RUSSIA russia.ru. Current information is published in the "Events" section.

The next lecture in the series — "Russian Architecture in a Global Context" — will take place on May 30. The guest speaker will be Andrei Chernikhov, Professor of the International Academy of Architecture, Head of the Architecture programme at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, President of the Yakov Chernikhov Foundation, and curator of "The Birth of Scale" exposition.

The exposition "The Birth of Scale" at the National Centre RUSSIA showcases completed architectural projects as well as ideas that remain only as concepts. The exposition consists of both the National Centre RUSSIA's own objects and those provided by museums and private collectors across the country.

Partners of the exposition "The Birth of Scale" include DOM.RF, the Ministry of Construction of Russia, Gazprom, the State Research Museum of Architecture named after A. V. Shchusev, the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Yakov Chernikhov Charitable Architectural Foundation, and the HSE School of Design.
