"What to read?!": the Strugatsky brothers' legacy and the future of science fiction to be discussed at the National Centre RUSSIA
On 28
August, the author's event of the National Centre RUSSIA — the Literary Club "What to read?!" with Alexey Chesnakov — will be held. This
time, the meeting will be dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of Arkady
Strugatsky, a Russian writer whose name has become synonymous with classic
science fiction.
On the eve of the event, Boris Dolingo, one of the club's
members, Russian sci-fi writer and chairman of the Board of the Sverdlovsk
regional branch of the Union of Writers of Russia, shared his opinion about the
upcoming meeting.
"I would like to invite you to an event dedicated to the birth centenary of the outstanding Soviet and Russian writer Arkady Strugatsky. He worked in tandem with his brother, Boris, and together they entered the history of literature as the famous creative union — the Strugatsky brothers," said Boris Dolingo. — Arkady will be 100 years old on 28 August 2025. In Moscow, at the National Centre RUSSIA, both the Strugatsky brothers' work, and broader issues related to science fiction, will be discussed. I am sure that it will be interesting for all those who like to read. Those who are not yet familiar with the Strugatskys’ works will probably want to discover their books after our meeting. And those who have known them well for a long time will have a reason to re-read their favorite books and look at them from a new angle. Even those who have not yet turned to science fiction at all will be able to feel its appeal."
According to the writer, sci-fi is a special genre of
literature that teaches people to dream, opens them the way to the future, and
helps to better understand the most important issues of life. That is why the
Strugatsky brothers' books remain relevant and significant to this day.
"They
helped to comprehend the meaning of humanity's existence, asked questions and
inspired reflection," said chairman of the Board of the Sverdlovsk
regional branch of the Union of Writers of Russia.
