Attention, imagination and a sense of one’s partner — guests of the "Legacy. Theatre. The Greats" exposition were able to develop these skills at an acting masterclass. The session was led by actors of the Central Academic Theatre of the Russian Army, Kirill Klimovich and Alina Trusevich, as part of the theatre professions festival held at the National Centre RUSSIA on 15–16 September.

Participants were introduced to basic exercises used at theatre institutes and colleges: training in attention, imagination and awareness of one’s partner. Guests were able to try their hand at acting, work as a team and learn more about the everyday work of performers.

"There is a reason people say that acting is 99% hard work and 1% talent. Everyone has their own natural abilities, but if you want to work in theatre, 99% of your time should go into self-improvement. During the workshop, we tried several exercises focusing on attention, imagination and awareness of one’s partner — a chance to experience the profession we practise every day," said Kirill Klimovich.

One workshop participant said the session allowed her not only to learn more about the theatrical profession, but also to feel part of the creative process.

"I came to the exposition because I had heard a lot about it, and I really enjoyed it. It was especially nice to take part in the workshop as well. Kirill explained everything very clearly: we practised listening to our partner, using our imagination and paying more attention to ourselves and others. I had always thought acting was something unattainable, but today I realised that it takes a great deal of work, yet if you genuinely love what you do, there is a lot you can learn," said workshop participant Yelena Nekrasova.

Staff of the Central Academic Theatre of the Russian Army introduced visitors to different areas of theatre work: creating costumes and props, the work of a sound engineer, literary manager and assistant director, as well as the organisation of a production. The festival programme also included workshops on stage vocals and choreography.

The theatre professions festival was held as part of the "Legacy. Theatre. The Greats" exposition, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Theatre Union of Russia and united by the motto "Union of Happy People". The project is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives.

The "Legacy. Theatre. The Greats" exposition is open to visitors at the National Centre RUSSIA until 25 September inclusive. Registration is required to join a guided group tour, while visitors can also explore the exposition independently with an audio guide.
