Who owns your AI? Watch the new Open Dialogue podcast episode on technological sovereignty

The new episode of the National Centre RUSSIA Open Dialogue podcast explores key questions of the digital age: who owns AI and data, where the line lies between technological cooperation and dependence, and whether a country can be a digital power if its key platforms are under external control. In the new episode, Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office of Russia, and BharatGPT creator Ankush Sabharwal discuss technological sovereignty in the age of artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is becoming a new global infrastructure — a technology as fundamental as electricity or water. Ankush Sabharwal believes that every country needs its own sovereign AI. This does not mean isolation or attempting to create a single large national language model. In India, AI is already helping people buy railway tickets, interact with government services, choose insurance products and forecast financial risks. According to Sabharwal, the technology should be accessible and deliver practical benefits to millions of people.

Maxim Oreshkin drew attention to another side of the issue. Having domestic models, energy resources, computing power and data does not guarantee technological sovereignty if key platforms and services remain under external control. In these circumstances, it is particularly important to understand where the boundary lies between international cooperation and technological dependence, as well as which critical decisions states need to keep under their own control.
