Panel created as part of the "Lace of Russia" campaign was presented at the Exposition
On May 25, in the Cultural Projects Zone of Pavilion No. 75 of the International RUSSIA EXPO, a presentation of a lace panel created as part of the "Lace of Russia" campaign was held.
The campaign was initiated by the Government of the Vologda region in December 2023. The large-scale panel in the colors of the Russian flag and with the symbols of the RUSSIA EXPO was woven for almost five months by lacewomen from eight regions of the country: the Vologda, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Lipetsk, Ryazan, Kirov and Leningrad regions, as well as St. Petersburg.
Bobbin lace weaving is a distinctive craft of several regions of Russia. Over the last centuries each of them has developed its own artistic features of lace patterns. The most famous center of lace weaving in Russia is Vologda.
"The uniqueness of the project lies in the fact that eight regions took part in the creation of this masterpiece. Only eight regions — traditional centers of lace weaving - have preserved this art. This is what we are proud of, this is our history, our present and our future," emphasized Sergei Zhestyannikov, Deputy Governor of the Vologda region.
The panel is completely handmade using traditional lace weaving techniques. In the past, lacemakers have repeatedly created large-scale panels for various expositions of all-Russian and international level, but there have never been such joint works of different regions in the history of Russian lace weaving.
Each fragment of the panel is unique, it reflects the stylistic features of regional lace: Kirov, Yelets, Balakhna, Ryazan and others. And together they form a common composition united by love for the Motherland, traditions and craft.
"We will try to pass on this wonderful craft to our younger generation - it's important. I would like to thank all the craftsmen from different regions who contributed to the creation of this panel, which will become a kind of symbol of the RUSSIA EXPO," added Sergei Zhestyannikov.
