Astrakhan cattail products will be shown at the RUSSIA EXPO
Astrakhan craftsmen are preparing cattail (also called typha or chakan in Russian) products for the International RUSSIA EXPO. Weaving from this amphibian plant is one of the ancient crafts of the Astrakhan land. Now it is preserved by craftsmen of the Crafts House of the regional scientific and methodical center of folk culture.
Cattail grows in abundance on the territory of the region, it is characterized by special valuable properties. In the past, this material was used to insulate houses. Food was stored in chakan baskets so that it would not spoil for a long time. Weaving from cattail continued to be popular until the 1970s.
At the RUSSIA EXPO baskets and boxes, bread bowls and even lapti (traditional Russian bast shoes) woven from cattail will be brought from the Astrakhan region. There will also be woven dolls, as well as a fashionable souvenir — bags "Astrakhanochka". This unusual accessory is woven in a special way. Thanks to this, despite its graceful appearance, the bag can bear a heavy load.
The international RUSSIA EXPO will be held at the VDNH and all 89 regions of the country will take part in it.
The performance took place as part of the international Open Dialogue "The Future of the World. New Platform for Global Growth."
