RUSSIA EXPO hosted a discussion on military documentary filmmaking
Documentary filmmakers Maxim Fadeev and Sergei Belous at the
RUSSIA EXPO talked about how films are made in war conditions, discussed the
difference between war documentary and journalism, and shared their memories of
the very beginning of the conflict in Donbass in 2014.
"We need to learn to separate the profession of a war
correspondent and a documentary filmmaker. We shoot specifically to chronicle
and historically chronicle pivotal moments. War correspondents, on the other
hand, do it for a general audience. Of course, many of us do not know who took
Izyum and Volchansk because access was limited. But thanks to our joint work we
can complement each other and bring the truth to the public," emphasized
Sergei Belous.
In turn, Maxim Fadeev answered questions from the audience,
they concerned the process of shooting documentaries in the conditions of
military operations. According to him, one of the main criteria to be followed
is the transparency of the covered events.
The event was held as part of the II International
Documentary Film Festival. All films by RT documentary filmmakers are available
on the 24-hour RT.Doc channel, most of the airtime of which is devoted to films
about heroes. For more information about the program, please visit the official
