We are united by dance: choreographer Lyosha Kot on creating the parable "Khorovod"
Dance is a language that needs no translation and speaks
directly to the audience's emotions. This was highlighted by choreographer
director and ballet master of the State Academic Maly Theatre of Russia, Lyosha
Kot, at the premiere of the musical and choreographic parable "Khorovod" at the National Centre RUSSIA.
"Each of us has seen social media videos like '10
places you must visit in your lifetime'. In many ways, our project is about the
same thing: we gave the audience the opportunity to see unique, 'must-see'
points on the country's choreographic map. I had read about them in books, in
ballet encyclopaedias — and today the leaders of these ensembles are standing
beside me. That is an immense source of pride," said Lyosha Kot.
According to him, working on the parable was not a series of
surprises. On the contrary, there was a constant sense of being part of
something fundamental and, at the same time, deeply personal: "Every minute I felt that this was something
extraordinary, rooted in deep tradition — and yet truly my own. Folk
choreography and contemporary dance turned out not to be opposites, but parts
of a single living language. We are united by dance. It is an international,
interregional language. You don't need words to understand it. The
expressiveness of movement is our main tool — it goes straight to the
audience's heart."
Lyosha Kot also noted that leading ensembles from across the
country took part in the project, and that the parable itself became an example
of how tradition and modernity can exist within the same circle. As in a
khorovod (round dance), where everyone remains themselves while feeling part of
a greater whole.
The musical and choreographic parable "Khorovod"
is a large-scale project of the National Centre RUSSIA dedicated to one of the
country's most important cultural symbols. Through dance and music — universal
languages understood without translation — the audience was introduced to the
richness of the cultures of Russia's peoples. In a country where hundreds of
languages are spoken, the khorovod̗ as the shared circle, becomes a powerful
symbol of unity.
