The National Centre RUSSIA congratulates residents of the Astrakhan region on Region Day
Sweet watermelons, the mesmerising bloom of lotus flowers, magnificent views of the Volga and, of course, exceptionally kind and welcoming people — this is the Astrakhan region, a part of Russia rich in natural and cultural landmarks. The National Centre RUSSIA congratulates the region’s residents on the 82nd anniversary of its founding.
On 27 December 1943, the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on the establishment of the Astrakhan region was signed. It became Russia’s southern outpost and a strategic hub at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Astrakhan lands have been known since the time of the Golden Horde, which founded an international centre of trade here. At the end of the 14th century, the Astrakhan Khanate emerged with its capital in Astrakhan. In 1556, these lands were conquered by Ivan the Terrible and became part of the Russian state.
Today, the Astrakhan region makes a significant contribution to Russia’s socio-economic development. Major enterprises in the gas-chemical, fisheries, mechanical engineering and shipbuilding clusters operate efficiently in the region, while the agro-industrial sector has also achieved considerable success. The region holds a leading position in the country in the breeding reproduction of Bactrian camels. Regional authorities pay particular attention to modernising the infrastructure of the international North–South transport corridor and increasing freight turnover along its key routes.
The Astrakhan region is also a destination where tourism is actively developing, offering something of interest for everyone. Popular attractions include the Volga–Akhtuba Floodplain Nature Park, the ecological trails of the Astrakhan State Nature Biosphere Reserve, and excursions to Mount Bolshoye Bogdo and Lake Baskunchak. One of the region’s most striking natural landmarks is the Volga River delta, where lotus flowers bloom from mid-July to late August. During this period, the delta’s waters transform into vast pink carpets. Tours to the lotus fields are especially popular among photographers and nature enthusiasts.
However, the greatest treasure of the Astrakhan region is, without doubt, its people. Representatives of around 150 nationalities live here in peace and harmony, respecting each other’s cultures and traditions.
The Astrakhan region is part of the Southern Federal District, which is widely represented at the "Journey Across Russia" exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA. Visitors can learn more about our country during a guided tour of the exposition. Registration is available on the website russia.ru in the "Events" section.
