On March 20, a meeting of the Presidium of the Public Council under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation was held at the National Centre RUSSIA, chaired by Anatoly Kucherena.

The event was attended by Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Major General of Police Yevgeny Lukin, Deputy Head of the Department of the Main Directorate for Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Colonel of Police Sergei Avertin, as well as Presidium members of the Public Council under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Vladimir Volokh, Alexei Zabelin, Konstantin Abramov, Vladimir Solovyov, Igor Morzharetto, and Nikolai Kondratov.

The main topic of the meeting was the improvement of the financial literacy of the population. The participants discussed issues related to the prevention and suppression of illegal fraudulent actions carried out under the guise of investment activities.

"Often, potential victims, wishing to make a profit out of thin air, independently use VPN services to find so-called foreign brokerage companies online and entrust them with their savings. In this regard, educational work plays an important role. For example, before cooperating with brokerage companies, citizens should verify on the Bank of Russia’s website whether the company has the appropriate license and whether it is included in the list of companies with signs of illegal activity on the financial market," reported Yevgeny Lukin.

During the meeting, factors contributing to the reduction of potential risks and the protection of citizens' financial well-being were also discussed. In particular, the current opportunity to apply for a self-ban on the issuance of loans for individuals, effective since March 1 of this year, was positively noted.

The discussion was joined by Solbon Khobrakov, a member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Buryatia, and Natalia Khalezhova, a member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Nizhny Novgorod, via video conference. The public representatives spoke about the work being carried out in the regions aimed at countering fraud in the financial sector.

"There are quite a few appeals from citizens to law enforcement on this topic. Our task as a public council is to prevent, warn people, and explain the possible consequences of their decisions. It’s important to remember, if someone offers you an interest rate higher than what a bank offers, it’s a reason to be cautious, because there may be fraudulent schemes involved," noted Anatoly Kucherena.

The second issue of the meeting was the draft work plan of the Public Council under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for 2025.

At the end of the meeting, its participants were able to visit the exposition "Journey Across Russia," which brought together on one platform the main achievements, innovative developments, cultural, natural, and historical landmarks of all federal districts of the country.
