On 17 April, a meeting was held at the National Centre RUSSIA as part of the literary club  "What to Read? !". The event was hosted by Yelizaveta Morskaya, correspondent of the "Russia 24" TV channel. The guest of the meeting was writer, candidate of political sciences, chairman of the organising committee of the cultural festival "Russian Rome," and laureate of the V. Pikul and Terra Incognita literary awards Vladimir Torin.

The literary club discussed Russian classics, the impact of modern times on young people's interest in literature, and the importance of family libraries.

"We are very lucky in this regard. Behind us, invisibly, stand the great writers who are the pride not only of Russia but of the whole world. These are Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov. And we can read these authors and their works in the original language, as well as in translation. These great people conveyed great ideas in their books — ideas of humanism, kindness, and proper upbringing. Ideas that help us become better people. And how can these ideas be passed on without such a book, without a home library?" — noted Vladimir Torin.

During the discussion, the host and the guest also touched upon the works of global literary classics, as well as the guest’s personal preferences and favourite literary works.

"I used to get lost in the library as a child. I read everything by Jules Verne. When you read a book in your youth, you associate yourself with the main character — a musketeer, an astronaut... At each specific stage of life, you need your own special book. The one that left a lasting impression on me was Two Captains by Veniamin Kaverin. What I see in today’s event is roughly what, I hope, our writers — whose work we are discussing today — saw in society. Our task is to make people at least a little kinder, a little more noble," the writer emphasised.
