The secrets of stand-up comedy were revealed at the National Centre RUSSIA
On April 3, the National Centre RUSSIA hosted the evening "The Secrets of Stand-Up Comedy" as part of the author's project "Thursday. Development." The event featured Alexei Yuryanov, champion of the Higher League of KVN, Open Mic VK, and Money Mic VK, writer, and member of the Krasnoyarsk team in the show "Stars," as well as Ilya Krasnov, participant of Open Mic VK, Money Mic VK, the Stand-Yp show "Community," and writer for the show "Women's Stand-Up" on TNT.
The comedians shared their secrets to success with Stand-Up enthusiasts and revealed behind-the-scenes details of the genre.
"Stand-Up started emerging here around 2010. The turning point can be considered the launch of the Stand-Up program on TNT in 2013. That’s when a stand-up boom began in Russia, with open mic nights being organized in different cities. This young genre, of course, differs from Western Stand-Up; it takes into account our realities and mentality. It is still taking shape but has already become part of our cultural life," noted Alexei Yuryanov.
The comedian explained that every joke should meet three criteria: paradox, relevance, and novelty. In Stand-Up, a joke's structure may include the main theme, an attitude toward it, personal experience, an unexpected twist, the first act-out, a resolution, and the final act-out.
"Stand-Up in Russia is now divided into Stand-Up in Moscow and stand-up in the regions. The capital has about 10 specialized clubs. Around 20 events take place daily, with approximately 1,000 comedians working in this genre. The same number of comedians can be found across the rest of Russia. Stand-Up clubs exist in Saint Petersburg, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, and Novosibirsk," said Ilya Krasnov.
Alexei Yuryanov advised aspiring comedians to keep pursuing comedy despite challenges. Ilya Krasnov added that it is essential to perform more and constantly write new material. Both comedians were impressed by the scale of the National Centre RUSSIA and promised to visit the expositions held there.
The National Centre RUSSIA’s original program "Thursday. Development" is a series of educational events where experts from various fields share insights into their work, present achievements, offer professional advice useful for a broad audience, and answer questions from the audience. This format promotes a productive exchange of experience and helps like-minded individuals connect. Previously, event participants discussed the impact of nutrition on beauty and health, environmental issues and animal protection, the dangers of short videos, and much more.
