"Children understand engineering": Ayrat Bagautdinov presented a book on Architect Shukhov at the National Centre RUSSIA
The presentation of the reissued book "The World of Engineer Shukhov," dedicated to the great Soviet engineer and architect Vladimir Shukhov, took place at the National Centre RUSSIA on June 4.
The book tells the story of Vladimir Shukhov’s life and career. Many masterpieces of engineering were created based on his blueprints, including the first Russian factories and oil pipelines. The publication is intended for a family audience and will be of interest to both adults and young readers, noted the author — historian of architecture and engineering, and founder of the project "Moscow Through the Eyes of an Engineer," Ayrat Bagautdinov.
"In my experience, children understand everything related to engineering no worse than adults. Their logical thinking develops quite early. I’ve had examples where five-year-old children grasped the principles of mesh structures better than many adults. The most important thing is to talk to them as adults, using methodical techniques. For instance — interaction, like in this book," said Ayrat Bagautdinov.
The updated edition of "The World of Engineer Shukhov" was prepared in collaboration with the publishing house Alpina.Children, with support from DOM.RF. The book tells the story of a man who made an enormous contribution to the fields of construction and engineering, invented four innovative structural types, and was a truly versatile engineer. Vladimir Shukhov worked in the oil industry, boiler engineering, and bridge construction. One of his most famous creations is the Shukhov radio and television tower. It is located in Moscow on Shukhov Street, near the Shabolovka television centre.
The legacy of this great architect continues to influence the development of urban environments across Russian cities, noted Adelina Shaibakova, Chief Architect of the Project Department at DOM.RF, during the book presentation.
"The reissue of this book carries significant meaning for society and for future generations. A modern architect combines the roles of engineer and designer. In developing new projects, they rely on the experience of great predecessors. It is impossible to overstate Vladimir Shukhov’s contribution to the foundations of engineering and architectural thought," said Adelina Shaibakova.
In an open dialogue format, Ayrat Bagautdinov engaged with young visitors to the National Centre RUSSIA. The children shared their first construction achievements with the author and asked questions about the Shukhov Tower. Those who asked the best questions received a copy of the book as a gift.
