Family leisure as a little miracle: why we have so little of it and how to find it at the National Centre RUSSIA

How often do modern parents and children manage to spend real quality time together — not in passing, not "on the way" somewhere, but consciously, sharing experiences, conversations and the sense of genuinely enjoying leisure time as a family? According to psychologist Yelena Avdeyeva, in a world where everyone has their own tasks, deadlines and screens, spending leisure time together becomes a need that cannot be ignored. The National Centre RUSSIA was created as a space where spending time with loved ones is particularly pleasant and comfortable.

"In the modern world, where every family member often lives at their own pace and has their own tasks and responsibilities, quality time together helps bring the family back together as a whole. It creates a shared space for new experiences, exchanges of opinions and a range of emotions. It restores the emotional connection that is often lost in the daily rush because of stress and fatigue. It is while relaxing together that all members of the family share joy and surprise, reveal different sides of themselves and create cherished memories that will strengthen the family for many years to come," says psychologist Yelena Avdeyeva.

At the National Centre RUSSIA, this kind of time together comes naturally. The exposition "Journey Across Russia" is currently open here, offering a route across the entire country that can be completed in a single day without leaving Moscow. For children, it is not a dry account of history but a real adventure filled with vivid imagery, interactive experiences and stories about the regions. For adults, it is an opportunity to see a familiar country from a different perspective and discuss with their children where they have already been, where they dream of travelling and why it is so important to know and love their Motherland. This is precisely the "intellectual form of leisure" described by the psychologist: visiting an exposition together is educational and provides shared topics for conversation, while the experiences become a starting point for discussions long after the visit.

On 28 July, another important family space will be added to this route: the exposition "Legacy. Theatre. The Greats", held under the motto "A Union of Happy People" and dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation. It offers a glimpse of the theatrical world through the eyes of those who create it every day: actors, directors, designers, costume designers and make-up artists. More than 600 unique exhibits, interactive areas, rare artefacts and stories about theatrical professions provide an opportunity to show children that theatre is not only about the people on stage but also an entire universe of professions behind the scenes. For parents, it is a chance to talk about their favourite productions, discuss which of the "theatre people" their child would like to become and try out new roles together, if only through play.

"Spending leisure time together allows family members to see one another in a new way and step outside their usual roles. They can allow themselves to be funny, resourceful, unpredictable, gentler, more attentive to one another, relaxed and free. It is particularly important for children to experience healthy family relationships: how people can relax together, how parents behave during leisure time and what joy and happiness alongside loved ones look like," the psychologist explains.

The educational programme of the National Centre RUSSIA seems tailor-made for families to enjoy together. It includes educational lectures and meetings of the Literary Club "What to Read?!". Just recently, guests discussed the hidden meanings of fairy tales and their relevance to contemporary readers, explored who Baba Yaga is and discovered why stories that may initially appear to be for children were often originally created for adults.

The next meeting will be dedicated to Russian philosophy — its past, present and future. It offers a rare opportunity to discuss profound questions with teenagers and older schoolchildren in an informal setting: what good and evil, freedom and responsibility mean, and what our understanding of justice is ultimately based on.

Creative workshops add another dimension to family leisure at the National Centre RUSSIA. Families can make souvenirs together, try different techniques and experience what it is like to create something new with their own hands. A poster drawn together, a handmade toy or a decorated notebook can later serve as a "memory anchor": seeing it at home will bring back not only the object itself but also the laughter, conversations and unexpected discoveries.

"Creative leisure activities — drawing, culinary experiments and handicrafts — bring people closer together, help reveal talents, create something new and inspire a sense of pride in yourself and your loved ones," the expert emphasises.

A family day at the National Centre RUSSIA is not limited to scheduled events. Families can simply stroll through the space, visit the Department Store, find "that special item" with a story behind it, take photographs in the photo areas, visit the Gastronomic Rows and try dishes from different regions. Yelena Avdeyeva considers this kind of leisure, without a strict plan or list of tasks, equally important: "Sometimes it is very important not to plan anything in particular. Watch a film, lie on the grass or talk about nothing in particular. This teaches us to enjoy one another's company, helps us relax and accept our loved ones as they are, and relieves accumulated stress."

The psychologist also draws attention to several simple rules for family leisure: "Try to consider the interests of all family members as far as possible. Do not turn your leisure time into a 'perfectly planned event', or it may become as exhausting as work. Switch off your devices for at least a couple of hours, pay attention to one another and share warmth. Create new traditions and family rituals — they will bring your family together and make it stronger."

The National Centre RUSSIA was created as a space where such traditions can emerge naturally. It allows families to combine different forms of leisure — active, intellectual and creative — but most importantly, no one will have time to feel bored or sad here: "May the time you spend together as a family be a little summer miracle that allows you to appreciate one another's value and importance.
