Fall in love in three days: a personal Kaliningrad region itinerary by writer Yevgeny Grishkovets
How can a guest experience the soul of a region in just a
few days? This question was answered at the National Centre RUSSIA during the
Kaliningrad Region Days by one of its most well-known residents, writer Yevgeny
Grishkovets. He proposed a personal three-day express itinerary that allows
future visitors to discover the key attractions of Russia’s westernmost region.
Day one: the power and beauty of the Baltic Sea
The writer first recommends experiencing the region’s main
element — the sea — while honestly warning that the Baltic weather is
changeable, so visitors should always have a "Plan B". If the coast
greets you with wind and rain, he suggests heading to Zelenogradsk, a
"tiny town with cats that everyone loves", the cosy resort of
Svetlogorsk, or Baltiysk, the westernmost city in Russia.
"If this is your first visit to the region, the best
place to stay is Kaliningrad itself. From here, you can reach almost any
seaside town in about 40 minutes. And if the weather turns rainy, you can
always spend your time usefully in the regional capital, without risking a
return from the sea cold, wet, and miserable," Yevgeny Grishkovets
advised.
Day two: history, music, and the ocean
For the second day, Yevgeny Grishkovets recommends a rich
cultural programme in Kaliningrad. A visit to the Cathedral is, in his words,
essential. It is one of the city’s oldest landmarks and hosts unique organ
concerts every day.
"You experience the full power of the organ in a
genuine medieval cathedral. What is more, the cathedral has two organs
connected to each other, and the organist can play them simultaneously. I have
travelled all over the world, but I have never heard anything like this — it is
astonishing," the writer assured.
Within walking distance of the cathedral is another iconic
landmark — the Museum of the World Ocean, which Yevgeny Grishkovets calls the
most grand and large-scale museum of its kind in the world.
"It includes numerous museum buildings, a vast open-air
area, a large number of moored ships, a real submarine, the world’s largest
anchor collection, and much more. You can easily spend a whole day there, or
even longer, and it will be equally interesting for both children and
adults," promised Yevgeny Grishkovets.
Day three: flora and fauna
For the final day, Yevgeny Grishkovets suggests slow,
unhurried time in nature. In particular, he recommends visiting the historic
zoo located right in the city centre: "It is a very cosy and compact zoo
that truly adorns Kaliningrad. The animals are well cared for there and do not
sit in cages. When you walk nearby, you can hear birds singing joyfully,
monkeys calling, and elephants trumpeting from within the zoo grounds."
If time allows, visitors can also take a boat or kayak trip
along the city’s unique canal system. According to the writer, this can become
one of the most vivid impressions of the entire visit.
"You simply float along and see the ruins of old
buildings, medieval stone bridges, cathedrals, museums, and the beauty of parks
and forests — it is breathtaking," said Yevgeny Grishkovets, adding that
three days are, of course, not enough to fully explore Kaliningrad, but more
than enough to fall in love with it and want to return.
The Kaliningrad Region Days are taking place at the
"Book of Fairy Tales" exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA from
13 to 18 January. Events within the regional thematic programme are free to
attend with prior registration on the website russia.ru. The up-to-date
schedule is available in the "Events" section.
