Republic of Altai
The Republic of Altai is a unique mountainous region of Russia with a picturesque landscape in the center of Eurasia. Rospatent has registered a brand of the Republic of Altai, called “Gorny (lit. Mountainous) Altai – the eco-capital of Russia”. The UNESCO World Natural Heritage List includes 5 natural sites - Mount Belukha, Lake Teletskoye, Altai and Katunsky biosphere reserves, and the Ukok Quiet Zone natural park.
The Altai Republic is located in the very center of Asia in the south of Western Siberia at the junction of the Siberian taiga, Kazakh steppes and semi-deserts of Mongolia. This is a mountainous country with an extremely picturesque landscape, “Russian Tibet” in the center of Eurasia at the junction of several states, natural areas and cultural worlds.
The territory of the republic is 92.9 thousand sq. km.
The predominant terrain is mountainous.
The highest Altai mountain - Belukha (Kadyn-Bazhy) which is 4509 m, is also the highest peak in Siberia.
Huge reserves of high quality fresh water are contained in the mountain lakes of Altai. Only in Lake Teletskoye there are more than 40 cubic kilometers of clean water.
Gorny Altai has cultural and national traditions, which may be of interest to such fields of science as archaeology, folklore, linguistics, history and others.
