10 December — Chukotka Autonomous Area Day
The land of
whales, polar bears, the northern lights, a distinctive culture and
breathtaking landscapes — all this is the Chukotka Autonomous Area, which
celebrates its 95th anniversary on 10 December.
The Chukotka
Autonomous Area was established on 10 December 1930 by a resolution of the
Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the USSR. The
region is located in the far north-east of Russia and borders the Bering
Strait, connecting the Asia—Pacific region with North America. Historically,
Chukotka has been inhabited by indigenous peoples such as the Chukchi, the
Eskimos and the Evens, who have traditionally lived by hunting, fishing and
reindeer herding. Today the region is well known for its natural resources,
including deposits of gold, silver, coal and oil, as well as for its unique
Arctic and subarctic nature.
"Our
contribution to strengthening the country’s economic security through the
development of the mineral resources sector is inseparable from the
preservation of our unique nature and traditional industries. Today, thanks to
projects such as the "Journey Across Russia" exposition, millions of
people are rediscovering Chukotka — not as a distant periphery, but as a
strategically important, dynamic and welcoming outpost of Russia with enormous
potential. This growing recognition inspires our residents to achieve even
more," said the Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Area, Vladislav
Kuznetsov, in a conversation with the Press Office of the National Centre
RUSSIA.
The
Chukotka Autonomous Area is part of the Far Eastern Federal District, which is
prominently represented at the "Journey Across Russia" exposition at
the National Centre RUSSIA. Visitors can learn more about our country by taking
a guided tour of the exposition. Tours take place daily except Monday.
Registration is available on the russia.ru website in the "Events"
