25 reasons for pride: nuclear icebreaker "Arktika" — the power leading the country forward
"Arktika" is more than just an icebreaker. It is strength, intellect, and willpower capable of forging a path where none exists.
We continue our special project "25 Reasons for Pride," dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first inauguration of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. This date marked the beginning of a new era — a time of technological renewal, industrial sovereignty, and Russia’s return to the Arctic as a global leader.
"Arktika" is the lead icebreaker in the series of universal nuclear-powered icebreakers of project 22220. It is the largest and most powerful icebreaker project in the world.
Its main task is to ensure year-round escort of ships in the western part of the Northern Sea Route. The icebreaker can operate both in the deep Arctic seas and in the estuaries of Siberian rivers — thanks to its adjustable draft (from 8.5 to 10.5 meters).
It is capable of escorting large-tonnage vessels carrying liquefied gas, oil, equipment, and cargo, playing a key role in the development of Arctic logistics and energy. Built using Russian technologies and equipment, it is a symbol of Russia’s technological and industrial sovereignty.
