The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi marked a turning point when Russia not only hosted the Olympics, but did so at a level that is still regarded as a benchmark.

We continue publishing our special project "25 Reasons for Pride," dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s first inauguration. It was then that an era of decisive actions, ambitious projects, and historic achievements began.

Today’s reason for pride is the Sochi Olympics.

For the first time in its history, Russia hosted the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games — and did so with grandeur, dignity, and at the highest level of organization;

More than 2,800 athletes from 88 countries took part in the Olympics;

Russia ranked first in the overall medal standings, winning 33 medals, including 13 gold — it was a true triumph;

Sports venues, high-speed highways, modern railway stations, and a new international airport were built;

The opening ceremony of the Games is still considered one of the most beautiful and technologically advanced in the history of the Olympic movement;

More than 90% of the Olympic venues are still actively used — both for international competitions and for mass sports;

Ice arenas in Sochi regularly host championships in hockey, figure skating, short track, and curling;

The ski resorts of Krasnaya Polyana welcome over 2.5 million tourists annually, including international visitors;

The region's economy received a powerful boost: in just five years after the Olympics, the income of the Krasnodar region grew by more than 30%, and tourist traffic doubled;

As of the end of 2023, Sochi was recognized as one of the three most visited resorts in Russia, second only to Moscow and St. Petersburg;

The Olympics gave rise to major initiatives such as the Sirius Educational Centre, technology parks, sports academies, and the federal territory of the future.

Sochi 2014 was a victory not only for athletes. It was a victory for organizers, engineers, volunteers — for the entire country. Russia proved that it can be a leader not only in sports, but also in the ability to unite efforts for a great goal.
