"One Health" for BRICS: experts discussed the future of food security at the National Centre RUSSIA
The round table "One World — One Health", held on 24 September at the National Centre RUSSIA, became one of the key discussion platforms of the 5th International Conference Food Quality Food Safety. Leading industry experts discussed current challenges and prospects for strengthening food security within the framework of Russia’s cooperation with BRICS countries.
The discussion focused on the political aspects of food policy, the search for joint solutions to global food security challenges, the development of scientific and technological cooperation in the agricultural sector, as well as the exchange of experience in ensuring food quality and safety.
The meeting was moderated by Artem Daushev, Aide to the Head of Rosselkhoznadzor. He opened the discussion with a report on modern digital solutions for ensuring food security.
Roman Sychev, Deputy Director for Economics of the Russian Union of Dairy Industry Enterprises, presented an analysis of dairy exports, noting its steady growth despite the foreign policy environment. He stressed the need for systemic support for domestic producers.
"Strong export performance is possible only with stable operations in the domestic market and support for domestic production. In particular, we need to ensure that exports are based more on processed products than on raw materials, and that duties are largely replaced with a system of quotas," suggested Roman Sychev.
Yury Kovalev, Director General of the National Union of Pig Farmers, spoke about the successes of domestic pig farming. He noted that the sector, virtually destroyed in the 1990s, has made a real breakthrough in recent years.
"We truly have a lot to be proud of. In the 1990s, almost all pork production in Russia was destroyed, but over the past two decades it has grown many times over, and worldwide it can indeed be called a phenomenon. We have not only eliminated import dependence, but also entered the global top five pork producers. This is truly a matter of national pride. Our main strategic challenge now is to join the world’s top five pork exporters in the next ten years," said Yury Kovalev.
Darya Podymova, Head of Foreign Economic Activity and Certification at the National Union of Poultry Farmers, focused in her presentation on the competitive advantages of domestic poultry farming, describing biosecurity as a key tool for maintaining confidence in Russian products on the international market.
Tatiana Balagula, Head of the Department of State Veterinary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor), gave a presentation on the digitalisation of veterinary supervision. She spoke in detail about the introduction and development of electronic traceability systems as a fundamental tool of control.
Yevgeniya Simonova, Project Director at Rapid Bio (Skolkovo), presented innovative technological solutions in the field of food safety diagnostics. She emphasised that it is important to work not only on food import substitution, but also on developing domestic diagnostic tests to promptly identify deviations from the "gold standards" of quality.
The round table concluded with a presentation by Alisa Razumova, PhD in Biology, Head of the Department for Coordination of Scientific Activities of the Federal State-Financed Institution "Federal Centre for Animal Health" (ARRIAH), and Associate Professor of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at RUDN University. She spoke about the key role of the institute in ensuring the country’s biological and food independence, underlining the interdisciplinary nature of the discussion.
