New Year tree of the Orel region: frosty embroidery and sacred symbols
The Orel spis — the most complicated embroidery with ancient Slavic symbols — became the main accent of the region’s New Year fir tree.
The main feature of the technique is the smooth flow of one form into another, a kind of fluidity. There is even a legend that in order to obtain this fluidity the craftswomen memorized and reproduced patterns from frosty windows in winter. Ceremonial towels, less often tablecloths (tabletops) were embroidered in this technique.
The main motifs of embroidery are outlines of trees, animals and birds. Popularly they are called: "tree of life", "pava birds", "frogs in labor", "horses".
The fir tree features items with images in folk costumes and whistle-toys, conveying the original character of folk art of local craftsmen.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by New Year fir trees, each representing a region of the country.
